The Mitchells Vs The Machines: The Spectacular Review

About the Mitchells Vs The Machines:

Katie Mitchell, an eccentric, aspiring, teenage filmmaker has recently been accepted to a film school in California. She is excited to leave her family and move across country to a group of online friends who except her quirky videos and creativity. Problem is, her parents who often clash, have other plans in mind before her departure.

To try to prevent a strained relationship, Katie’s family decides to take her on a cross-country road trip before her film school starts. With her mom, dad, brother and family dog, they find themselves on a road trip like any other.

Without giving away too much of the plot, expect doodles, memes, nostalgic references and a robot apocalypse. Maybe not in that order.

But the real question is, will the Mitchell’s survive this epic adventure and can they be humanity’s unlikeliest hope?

Mitchells Vs The Machine Fun Facts:

The Mitchell family reside in Kentwood, Michigan. (Have to love the home state, Michigan reference.)
This would be Sony Animation’s first Netflix film.
The car the family drives is a reference to the AMC pacer. The same car featured in films like A Goofy Movie, and Wayne’s World. (Rock on!)
The D at the Dino stop resembles the Disney logo. Might be a subtle jab at the Disney Animation Studio.
This is the first Sony Pictures Animation film to feature an LGBT character.

The Mitchells Vs The Machines: The Spectacular Review

I heard about the making of this film a few years back and honestly was not expecting much from it. When Netflix announced the showing of this film, I was a little hesitant, but heard strong reviews from friends and critics online.

To be honest, this movie blew my mind after the first watch, and it had me laughing at the pop culture references throughout the film. By far my favorite part of the film is the mall scene. The voiceover of the Furby mentioning the Dark Harvest had me laughing for more than a few minutes.

If I could describe this film it one sentence it would be: A kid friendly movie mixed with memes galore with a twist of National Lampoon’s Family Vacation.

I absolutely loved the creativity of this film from the writing style to the animation. You can tell the animators did a lot of research and had a fun time creating this film. Pretty sure all of them went to art / film school

I also liked the family dynamic and a character trying to fit in. I think anyone can relate to any of these characters and the plot of this film may be a tad bit overboard, but the message is great for family and friends.

The voice cast of this film was fantastic and really glad to see Sony Animation make another great film.

I give this movie, 4 out of 5 pug’s. I mean loafs!
